AXKID—Kids' Car Seat Subscription—Powered by circuly
Most subscription businesses are born subscription businesses. Axkid is not.
Founded in Sweden in 2009 by Tony Qvist and Tony Broberg, Axkid spent over a decade building one of Europe's most respected car seat brands — winning safety tests, expanding into 20+ markets, and earning a reputation for pushing child road safety standards beyond what regulations require.
For most of that time, the model was straightforward: design the safest possible car seat, manufacture it, and sell it.
Then, in 2023, Axkid added something new: Axkid Care — a monthly rental subscription for their car seats.
The initiative came from within. Axkid saw an opportunity to make their premium, safety-certified products more accessible to families who couldn't or didn't want to commit to an outright purchase, and to extend the life of products that — unlike most consumer goods — are designed to last far longer than any single child needs them.
It was also a natural fit for Axkid's sustainability commitments. A car seat that moves from family to family over its lifetime is a car seat that doesn't end up in landfill after 18 months of use.
The Axkid Care Model
Axkid Care offers monthly rental subscriptions for a curated selection of Axkid's core range — covering children from birth through to 12 years old.
Each subscription includes free shipping, full insurance, and access to Axkid's expert consultation service.
When a family is ready to return, they receive a return label by email and ship the seat back in any suitable packaging.
The current rental lineup spans the full age range:
- Gokid (0–1 year, 0–13 kg) — from 49 kr/month, with ISOFIX base option from 99 kr/month
- Spinkid 2 (0–4 years, 0–18 kg) — 249 kr/month, rotating seat, installs in under 60 seconds
- One 3 (6 months–7 years, 0–23 kg) — 299 kr/month, ADAC Test Winner, rear-facing up to 23 kg
- Minikid 4 Max (0–7 years, 0–36 kg) — 249 kr/month, magnetic harness, rear-facing up to 36 kg
- Up (4–12 years, 15–50 kg) — 199 kr/month, awarded Best in Test 2025, belt or ISOFIX installation
All plans include a one-time 250 kr registration fee.
Families manage their subscription, cancellations, and returns entirely through the Axkid Care self-service portal at care.axkid.com.
The Problem: WooCommerce Subscriptions Was Not Built for This
Axkid already ran their e-commerce operation on WooCommerce, with Stripe as their payment service provider.
When they decided to launch Axkid Care, the obvious starting point was WooCommerce Subscriptions — the native subscription extension for their existing CMS.
The fit wasn't there.
WooCommerce Subscriptions is built for digital and consumable subscriptions, recurring charges tied to regular new shipments.
It handles billing cycles well, but it has no native understanding of what happens when a physical product leaves the warehouse and needs to come back. There is no concept of asset tracking, return management, or the operational lifecycle of a rented item. For a car seat rental business, that gap is fundamental.
Stripe, similarly, is an excellent payment processor — but a payment processor alone doesn't manage the subscription logic, customer portal, return workflows, or ERP data flows that a physical product rental requires.
Combining WooCommerce Subscriptions and Stripe would have left Axkid building and maintaining custom logic for every operational scenario that fell outside a standard billing cycle.
Axkid needed a platform designed for the specific requirements of physical product subscriptions — one that could plug into their existing WooCommerce shop and broader tech stack without requiring them to rebuild it.
Why circuly
Axkid came to circuly with a clear brief: launch Axkid Care without disrupting the existing e-commerce operation, and handle the operational complexity of a physical rental subscription out of the box.
circuly integrates directly with WooCommerce, meaning Axkid's existing shop, product catalogue, and customer data infrastructure remained in place.
The rental operation runs through circuly as a distinct layer on top — connected to WooCommerce and to Axkid's ERP system, keeping inventory, orders, and customer records in sync across the full tech stack.
Three circuly modules sit at the core of the Axkid Care operation:
- circuly Checkout: The rental checkout flow, embedded into Axkid's WooCommerce storefront. Customers move from browsing to active subscription without leaving the Axkid environment, with billing handled by circuly in the background.
- Customer Self-Service Portal: The complete subscription management experience for Axkid Care customers — accessible at care.axkid.com. Families use it to manage their subscription, initiate cancellations, and trigger return workflows independently. This keeps support volumes low as the rental base grows.
- circuly Hub: The operational back end for the Axkid Care team. The Hub gives Axkid full visibility over active rentals, returns, and customer accounts — and provides the control layer for managing the physical asset lifecycle alongside the subscription lifecycle.
Why Car Seat Rental Makes Operational Sense
Car seats are one of the most logically suited product categories for rental. Children outgrow them in months, not years — a newborn seat is redundant by 9 months, a toddler seat by age 7. Buying premium safety equipment for a 12-month use window is expensive and wasteful. And yet safety is non-negotiable: parents cannot compromise on the quality of the seat just because the child won't need it for long.
Rental solves this directly. Families access Axkid's highest-rated, rigorously tested seats — the same products sold through their main shop — at a monthly cost that reflects the actual period of use. When the child grows out of the seat, the family returns it and moves on. The seat goes through inspection and cleaning before serving the next family.
For Axkid, the model extends the useful life of products built to last far beyond any single child's needs. A seat that retails for thousands of kronor, used for 12 months and discarded, is a seat whose full value was never realised — by the family or the environment.
Operations Where circuly Supports Axkid Care
circuly is the subscription management system behind Axkid Care, integrated directly with Axkid's WooCommerce shop and ERP. circuly handles subscription management, recurring billing and invoicing, asset tracking, return management, a customer self-service portal, and transactional communication — giving the Axkid Care team the operational infrastructure to run a physical product rental subscription at scale, without custom development.
Conclusion
Axkid Care shows what happens when an established brand approaches rental as a considered strategic extension — not a workaround or an experiment. With 15+ years of product excellence and safety credibility behind it, Axkid had the brand authority to launch a rental offering. What they needed was the operational infrastructure to run it cleanly, without disrupting a WooCommerce-based business that was already working. circuly provided exactly that: a purpose-built subscription management layer that integrates with their existing stack and handles the physical product lifecycle that generic billing tools cannot.
